If you have travelled around Australia camping in popular camp locations, then you have most likely camped at places with permanently fixed flat plate cookers and windshields at the campground. The reason why they chose this design is that it is easy to use, safe and robust. You can either build the fire in the windshield area of the BBQ and wait for it to burn down to coals before you start cooking, or you can shover the hot coals under the BBQ from your campfire nearby. I prefer the latter approach. Not all camping locations have BBQs provided so having a flat plate camping BBQ with a windshieldin the back of the car is a great idea and makes cooking over coals while camping an easier process.
